Sandy has been a feral visitor to my parents’ house on Emerald Isle for many, many years. We’re not quite sure of her age, though we estimate it’s well over 10 years. She’s always been difficult to get near, except when it’s feeding or treat time. She’d rub on my father’s legs, but met any attempt at petting her with a hiss and a swipe of her sharp claws. My parents have dutifully fed a colony of feral cats for quite some time but Sandy never seemed to get along with the rest of the crew — always the outsider.

This year, something changed in Sandy. She will now let my father pet her and pick her up. She’ll even spend a little time riding his leg as pictured. It’s never for a long time, but after years of hissing and swiping, my father couldn’t be happier.

I took the photo above while visiting my parents at their house on Emerald Isle, North Carolina. I was using expired film so I had to desaturate this one quite a bit. They looked like Oompa-Loompas and my father’s pants were glowing in the print.

I used a Canon A-1 body with a 50mm f/1.4 SSC lens and expired Kodak 400 film.
